Your doctor will do a physical exam that includes:
1) A pelvic exam.
- This is to see how your vagina, cervix, and uterus are healing.
- If you delivered vaginally, they'll also check on any tears or stitches.
2) A breast exam (if you're breastfeeding). Â
- They'll check for issues like sore nipples or infections like mastitis.
- If you're having trouble breastfeeding, they may refer you to a lactation consultant. Â Read more about breastfeeding basics here.
They may also talk to you about:
- Your vaginal bleeding (lochia) to make sure it's normal
- How you're feeling emotionally to check for signs of postpartum depression or anxiety
- Birth control options and/or future pregnancy planning
- When it's safe to resume exercise, sex, and other physical activities
Your doctor will:
- Examine your C-section scar to make sure it's healing properly and thereâs no infection
- Ask if you still have pain around the incision or in your abdomen
- Let you know what activities are safe and when you can lift heavy objects and exercise again
Your postpartum visit is a chance to discuss any concerns you have and make sure you're healing well after delivery.
