Menopause often brings noticeable changes, such as weight gain or differences in how your skin, hair, or body looks. Â These can affect how you see yourself, sometimes leading to dips in self-esteem or confidence. Â This is a common experience, and support is available.
CBT (cognitive behavioral therapy) can help you challenge your inner critic and build a more accepting, compassionate mindset.
Try this exercise:
- Start by noticing a negative thought, such as, âI don't like how I look.â
- Name the emotion it brings up.
- Ask yourself: "Is this 100% true?" "Is this thought kind?" "Is it helpful?" "What would I say to a friend?"
- Then, figure out how to reframe it in a positive way. Â For example, âMy body is changing, and thatâs OK. Â Itâs still strong, capable, and worthy of care.â
Shifting your thinking can help you feel more connected to your body and less judgmental.
- Practice self-compassion.
- Talk to yourself like you would a close friend.
- Notice any harsh self-talk and replace it with kindness: âI'm doing the best I can in a changing body.â - Shift your focus from appearance to function.
- Celebrate what your body can do, not just how it looks: âMy body carried me through decades of life. Â It deserves care."
- Take pride in your body's strength, endurance, energy, or healing. - Move your body regularly.
- Exercise boosts mood, confidence, and connection to your body.
- Try walking, stretching, dancing, or yoga.
- Focus on feeling good, not âfixingâ your body. - Dress in ways that feel authentic and comfortable.
- Wear clothing that makes you feel like yourself.
- Remember, comfort and confidence often go hand in hand. - Spend time with people who affirm you.
- Seek out relationships that make you feel seen and supported. - Engage in meaningful activities.
- Being creative, learning something new, or contributing to something greater can help rebuild your identity and confidence.
- Reconnect with hobbies, interests, or goals that give you a sense of purpose.
